    Counselor Academy Macomb, Green Careers - February 3, 2010

     

    The Counselor Academy met on February 3, 2010 at the Spoon River College Community Outreach Center in Macomb to discuss Green Careers.  Presenters included Pete Pohlman, Energy Specialist, Great River Economic Development Foundation (Green Jobs), Roger Brown, Business Development, BP Wind Energy (Wind Energy), Kim Pierce, Executive Director, Macomb Area Economic Development Corporation (Green Projects) and Steven Sager, Business Liaison & Communications Officer, Workforce Investment Office of Western Illinois (Greening of the World of Work).  In addition, counselors were provided information on green energy programs at local community colleges.

    ESN/EPIC News Conference - February 16, 2010

    Members of the ESN (Entrepreneur Support Network) of Western Illinois and EPIC (Entrepreneurs, Pioneers and Innovators Club) held a news conference on February 16, 2010 to share information on entrepreneurial community activities to include the new 2010 Small Business Day Celebration and Entrepreneur of Year competition.  Speakers included, Brad Price, Owner, Champion Technology Group, Cesar Suarez, Economic Development Director, City of Galesburg, Carol Stombaugh, Certified Business Specialist, Small Business Development Center, Cat Garza, Manager, Galesburg Entrepreneurship Center, Carrie McKillip, Extension Educator, University of Illinois Extension, Knox Unit and Jenny Garner, Extension Educator, University of Illinois Extension, Community & Economic Development, Rock Island County.

    WIB Meeting, OSF St. Mary Medical Center Galesburg - March 25, 2010

    The Workforce Investment Board of Western Illinois met at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg to witness how technology plays a key role in the healthcare profession.  Presentations were made by the Catheterization Laboratory and the hospital's state-of-the-art clinical training area.  WIB Chair, Robert Johnson, officially recognized Kari Houle, Horticulturist for the University of Illinois Extension, Knox County and Pam Van Kirk, Director, Galesburg Public Library for the outstanding cooperation and participation in the WIA 2009 Summer Youth Employment Program.

    College & Career Success Fair, Carl Sandburg College Galesburg - April 14, 2010

    Carl Sandburg College hosted a College and Career Success Fair on April 14, 2010 at their main campus facility.  The Fair provided an opportunity for people to interact with representatives from more than 40 area employers as well as explore new career fields and learn about CSC's Allied Health and Occupational programs.  The Workforce Investment Office of Western Illinois partnered with medical facilities in the area for information booth displays.

    WIB Meeting Carthage - June 23, 2010

    The Workforce Investment Board of Western Illinois met at the University of Illinois Extension, Hancock County.  Board member Jane Cramer made a presentation on "Making Innovation Work" which included an Internet video clip of Steve Job's, (Co-founder of Apple and Pixar) 2005 Commencement Speech at Stanford University.  Also, WIB Chair, Robert Johnson facilitated a Strategic Plan Report and discussion.

    Illinois Congressman Hare Visits Galesburg - July 6, 2010

    Illinois Congressman Phil Hare visited the Galesburg Workforce Service Center on July 6, 2010.  His briefing focused primarily on the Unemployment Insurance Extension initiatives.  Also, Blanche Shoup, Director, Workforce Investment Office of Western Illinois, provided a testimonial on the importance of Summer Youth Program funding and related workforce issues.
